Australia journalist detained in China launched after three years – JURIST

Distinguished Australian journalist Cheng Lei was released Tuesday by Chinese language authorities and reunited along with her household in Australia, after being detained in China since August 2020.

Lei was formally arrested in 2021 following allegations by Chinese language officers that Lei had been illegally supplying Chinese language state secrets and techniques abroad while working as a new-anchor for the Chinese language Authorities’s English -language tv channel CGTN.

Australian Minister for Overseas Affairs Penny Wong celebrated Lei’s homecoming, stating:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Lei in Melbourne to welcome her again to Australia.
